In 2013 The Wood Foundation granted £500,000 to support Robert Gordon University's new International Oil & Gas Institute at the campus in Aberdeen to help develop and secure its reputation as a global leader in oil and gas-related training and research.
The funds will be applied towards teaching and research both within the UK and Internationally, establishing RGU in a strong position from which to exploit its oil and gas expertise internationally as the North Sea matures.
By providing the skills, knowledge and research required, the Oil & Gas Institute aims to be the conduit through which all RGU activity - teaching, training and research - related to the oil and gas industry will flow. This includes the co-ordination and delivery of all education and training activities relevant to the oil and gas sector across the university's portfolio including brownfield development, unconventional oil and gas, industry collaboration, finance and economics, and offshore healthcare.
The creation of RGU's new Oil & Gas Institute will provide an important focus for the sector as a whole, attracting and developing expertise in key areas at an important time in the development of the North Sea to ensure Aberdeen and the UK's future growth and prosperity.
In 2015, a further £4.5million was granted by The Wood Foundation to the Robert Gordon University to ensure it becomes a global centre of excellence in oil & gas and remote healthcare. This will enable the university to attract people from industry and academia to bring international knowledge and expertise to supports its strategy of becoming globally recognised for teaching, research and innovation in its key sectors..
