Youth and Philanthropy Initiative Scotland
In 2008, The Wood Foundation invested funds to enable the Institute for Philanthropy to launch the Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) in Scotland. In its first year, this innovative citizenship programme was rolled out to ten schools across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire and by the 2014/15 academic year, over £1.3million had been donated to small, local charities in Scotland through 143 schools taking part in the programme.
The Youth and Philanthropy Initiative was originally the idea of Julie Toskan-Casale, founder of MAC Cosmetics, as an innovative way to financially support local, grassroots charities while engaging young people in a hands-on active citizenship experience. Since 2002, YPI has grown to become a successful, interactive programme operating in 300 schools across Canada, the United States, England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.
In the 2014/15 academic year, YPI was delivered in partnership with 143 Scottish secondary schools across 18 local authorities. During this period, almost 15,000 young people engaged with the programme, with £324,000 of local grants awarded to local Scottish charities. In the 2014/15 academic year, 143 schools are taking part in the programme within 24 Local Authorities, with £429,000 directed to local grassroots charities.
YPI is now established as a leader in the field of citizenship education programmes, providing a uniquely intensive, all round programme which has proven impact on personal, enterprise, employability and citizenship skills. YPI has been cited in eight of Her Majesty’s Inspectorate for Education (HMIE) School Reports as an example of best practice in Citizenship Education, specifically referencing its ability to develop wider achievement and enrich the life of the school.
The Wood Foundation wishes to acknowledge the support of the The Gannochy Trust (Principal Funder of YPI for Perth and Kinross), Scottish & Southern Energy (Principal Funder of YPI in the Highlands), The Speratus Group (Principal Funder of YPI in Edinburgh), the STV Appeal (National Partner in Scotland), The Orcome Trust (Community Partner in Midlothian), and Artemis (Community Partner in Edinburgh).
