Chai is an industry-level programme aimed at encouraging innovation and investment in the Tanzanian tea sector.
Since its launch in 2009, Chai has supported more than 21,000 smallholder farmers with an investment total of $10m.
Chai has adopted a portfolio of interventions which include matching grants to buy-down risk and encourage innovation with the private sector, co-investment with lead investors in greenfield development, and technical assistance with the broader industry to improve competitiveness of the market system.
